Biomedical Communications (BMC) program at the University of Toronto in 2002, participating in the computer animation dual stream with Sheridan College. Glen received his Hons. B.Sc. Biology from the University of Guelph in 2000, specialising in biomedical sciences and toxicology. While at Guelph he worked in the Department of Zoology developing web-sites and educational CD-ROMS, cataloguing the fauna of the Great Lakes basin and Canadian Arctic. Glen was both an Academic and Athletic All-Canadian swimmer, a two time Olympic Trials qualifier, co-Captain of the University of Guelph men's swim-team and University of Toronto Blue at heart. He is still active in aquatics through masters and by coaching age group swimmers. In his spare time Glen plays Ultimate a couple of times a week, reads the odd novel, does the occasional non-medical piece of artwork, continues to sand and varnish the canoe he built, and occasionally takes said canoe out for a trip. He prefers a good beer over the best martini any day, and considers his favourite a toss-up between Thai and Indian food. He is happiest doing just about anything outside. He resides with his cat "Tab" in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. What is a medical Illustrator? Medical illustrators are highly trained, highly specialised artists who can disseminate complex medical and scientific concepts through appealing visual media. Aside from having the talents and skills that make one an artist, medical illustrators must have an extensive education in medicine and an intimate knowledge of how science works to appreciate and present concepts to a wider audience. In North America, virtually all medical illustrators are required to have been trained at one of the small number of highly selective, rigorous graduate programs associated with certain prestigious medical colleges. There are only seven such programs, each graduating less than ten students per year. With such skills and knowledge, medical illustrators are often able to depict concepts and processes that could otherwise never be seen. What does a medical illustrator do? The first thing that comes to mind is "anatomy textbooks". However, communications - be it print, web, CD-ROM or video - has expanded dramatically in the last decade, opening up extensive new realms where the influence of medical illustrators can be both seen and felt. While print remains an enormously important medium and the traditional piece of medical artwork continues to be in high demand, many medical illustrators now tend to focus on powerful new mediums. This includes the development of web-sites that are easy for patients or caregivers to navigate while having cutting edge content for practitioners, and, of course, having outstanding graphics for the benefit of all. Some medical illustrators produce computer animations to depict the mode of action for new pharmaceuticals, the interactions between proteins, or complicated concepts for the benefit of courtroom jury. Medical illustrators are also consulted to produce designs incorporating medical or bio-tech subject matter, adding intelligence and insight to a project. So the term "medical illustrator" is really an understatement. Medical illustrators know what science and medicine looks like, and know how it should be brought to a broader audience. What can a medical illustrator do to help me? A medical illustrator can help you take your ideas and turn them into something that is both visually appealing and highly informative. A medical Illustrator can help you if: § You are a trial lawyer specialising in insurance claims, medical malpractice, or patent infringement, a medical illustrator can help your case by illustrating or animating the testimony of your expert witness. § You are involved in the marketing of biotech firms, venture capital, or investor relations for medically related technologies. § You are involved in the marketing of pharmaceuticals or medical products. § You are a publishing researcher: graphics can best visually summarise your findings and increase future citings. § You are producing continuing health education, or patient education material. From simple but precise fIow charts depicting biochemical pathways for journals to complex cinematic animations designed to attract investors, only a medical illustrator can add the intelligence and content your work demands. In science only an excellent picture is worth a thousand words. Where can I find other medical illustrators? If you would like to know more, or if my work isn't quite what you're looking for, contact me regardless. I would be happy to refer you to one of my talented colleagues or help you find someone more suited to your project.
